Getting Started
A flashcard is a single word or phrase that you want to learn, always studied together with an example sentence. Think of the sentence as the way you learn the word in context. You can select these sentences yourself or let the app find or generate them for you.
A deck is simply a collection of flashcards. Think of it as a list of words and/or phrases you want to study together.
In FlashCarding, you’ll always learn words in the context of sentences, never in isolation. When you create a flashcard in a deck, you can add one or more sentences to learn the word with. If you don’t, FlashCarding will automatically select or generate a sentence during your study session. For a more consistent learning experience, it’s often best to add sentences manually.
You can create cards in three ways:
- Directly from the deck editing page: There you’ll first be asked for the word or expression you want to learn.
- While reading: Works great for adding unfamiliar words to a deck without interrupting your reading flow.
- From your vocabulary page: For example, you can organize recently seen words into one or more decks.
You can import texts in three ways:
- From a file: We support EPUB, PDF, DOCX, and TXT formats. For structured content like books, EPUB is best because it preserves chapter titles and natural breaks.
- From a link: This is great for articles from blogs or newspapers. Just paste the URL and the content will be extracted for you. Note that some websites may not be compatible.
- From plain text: This lets you manually create sections with your own titles and content. It’s good for when you want more control or as a fallback option.
Absolutely! FlashCarding is designed for sharing. You can browse and import decks and texts shared by other users in the “Community” tab.
We also encourage you to share your own materials with the community by making them public. Just remember to respect copyright guidelines when sharing content.
Yes, FlashCarding includes some content to help you get started right away:
- 3 frequency decks per language, teaching you around 5000 of the most common words, with 3 pre-generated sentences per word.
- 5-6 well-known books in your target language, at various difficulty levels.
While these materials have been carefully curated and offer a starting point, we encourage you to create your own decks and import your own texts. This way, you can learn with content better tailored to your interests and needs.
Don’t worry! Each major section of the app (Flashcards, Decks, Reading, Texts, and Vocabulary) has an interactive walkthrough. These tutorials explain the key features by highlighting parts of the interface. We highly recommend you go through them to get the most out of FlashCarding!
Learning Science
FlashCarding tracks words into two categories:
- Active words: are words you have typed successfully at least once in a flashcard, and hence you have proven you can actively recall them.
- Passive words: are words that you have encountered while reading a text. You might understand them passively, but may not be able to produce them yet.
Only the base form of a word is tracked. For example, different conjugations of a verb (like in French) or different noun cases (like in Polish) aren’t counted as separate words. This keeps your vocabulary count much more accurate.
Spaced repetition is a proven learning technique where you review information at growing intervals of time. As you successfully recall items, the time between reviews lengthens, while if you struggle, the intervals shorten.
FlashCarding uses spaced repetition in flashcards mode. By default, reviews are scheduled at set intervals. If you want a more adaptive approach you can turn on “controlled mode” in settings. This will ask you to rate your recall on a scale of 1 to 4 after each flashcard, similar to other popular tools like Anki. This feedback helps the system adjust intervals based on your performance.
Typing, and writing in general, is a highly effective and often overlooked way of learning. It’s an active exercise that goes beyond passive recognition. It forces you to recall sentence structure and spelling. At first, it might feel like extra work, but you’ll find it gets easier with each repetition.
Sentences from novels or articles aren’t always ideal for learning. They can be overly long and complex, or too tied to a specific context.
Example sentences (like the ones you’d find in a dictionary) are often better, as they’re usually concise and focus on illustrating the meaning and usage of a single word.
Yes, FlashCarding automatically generates high-quality audio for each sentence! By default, the audio will play automatically after you submit a flashcard. You can also listen to the audio at any moment while completing the flashcard.
While we don’t currently support voice input for practicing, it’s something we might add in the future.

In language learning, your target language is the one you’re learning. Your source language is the one you’re learning from—usually your native language or one you know well. In FlashCarding, translations of words and sentences will appear in your chosen source language.
FlashCarding is a web app, meaning you can use it on any device with a web browser, including your phone. While it’s optimized for larger screens, you can add it to your phone’s home screen for a full-screen experience similar to a native app. Currently, we don’t have dedicated iOS or Android apps.
Currently, FlashCarding requires an internet connection to function. However, we understand the desire for offline access and we might consider it in the future.
Our sentences are generated by advanced AI models with a strong command of language. In some rare cases, a sentence or translation might sound unnatural or contain a mistake. As technology improves and we implement feedback mechanisms, these instances will become even rarer.
